With 25 years of experience as an HR executive, I've had the privilege of building HR departments from the ground up and collaborating closely with CEOs, CFOs, and other C-suite executives.

Follow Me

For the past 18 months, I’ve been on a yoga journey that’s completely transformed me physically. The benefits of yoga—the flexibility, strength, and the overall sense of well-being—are undeniable. What’s often overlooked, though, is the deeper mental, psychological, and emotional impact that yoga can have. Sometimes, even I forget about these aspects, but they are just as transformative, if not more.

Yoga is more than just a physical practice. It’s a doorway to self-awareness, inner peace, and, ultimately, a better relationship with yourself. Through consistent practice, you develop a greater understanding of who you are and what you need. That’s where the true magic happens.

Spirituality Isn’t a Dirty Word

When people hear the word “spirituality,” they often cringe, thinking it’s synonymous with religion. Let me clear that up: spirituality is not about worshipping a higher power (unless you want it to be). It’s about connecting with your inner self, finding meaning, and aligning your actions with your purpose. It's about tuning into the energy that drives you and understanding what makes you tick.

We live in a fast-paced world filled with noise—distractions from social media, work, and life’s endless demands. Spirituality, in its purest form, is the practice of silencing that noise and looking inward. It’s about making room for growth by cutting out the unnecessary mental clutter that holds us back. In essence, spirituality is the process of simplifying our inner landscape, making it fertile ground for personal and professional growth.

Setting Intentions: The Heart of Yoga Practice

One of the fundamental aspects of yoga is setting an intention before each practice. This is more than a motivational quote you throw out into the universe—it’s a commitment. It’s a way to dedicate your energy and focus to a purpose that aligns with where you are in life, emotionally and mentally. The power of setting an intention is that it keeps you present, mindful, and connected to your practice, both on and off the mat.

This practice has become crucial in my life. It serves as a constant reminder that everything we do, from our careers to our personal interactions, should be done with intention. When you move with purpose, you create more meaningful experiences, deeper relationships, and clearer paths forward.

Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone: The Sacred Cacao Ceremony

This past weekend, I participated in something that was far out of my comfort zone: a Sacred Cacao Ceremony with Tarot and Astrology. I went in with zero expectations, and I left enlightened.

A cacao ceremony is an ancient, sacred ritual where participants consume pure cacao to unlock euphoric states, release negative emotions, and connect more deeply with themselves. It’s not just about drinking chocolate—it’s about setting a deep, intentional sankalpa (more on that soon). After consuming the cacao, you enter a state of heightened awareness, which allows for reflection, clarity, and healing.

In this case, the ceremony included sound bowls, a visualization journey, and a community healing circle. I didn’t know what to expect, but I went in with an open heart, and what I found was a sense of clarity I hadn’t experienced before. The ceremony gave me the space to reflect on my own journey and the areas of my life that still needed work.

The Meaning of Sankalpa

A core focus of the ceremony was the sankalpa. In its simplest form, sankalpa is a vow or intention that reflects your deepest desires and goals. But it’s not just a New Year’s resolution you forget about two weeks later—it’s a commitment you make with yourself to align your actions, thoughts, and energies toward a specific purpose.

A sankalpa is your guiding light. For me, it became crystal clear during the ceremony: "I empower myself and others to unlock potential through purposeful transformation and intentional leadership, helping them navigate personal and professional challenges with clarity and strength." This encapsulates everything I’ve been working toward—helping myself and others grow, with intention.

The Biggest Revelation: Your Most Important Relationship

The most powerful moment of this journey was the realization that the most important relationship in life is the one you have with yourself. It hit me like a ton of bricks. If the relationship you have with yourself is fractured, filled with doubt, or disconnected, every other relationship in your life—whether personal or professional—will suffer.

Think of it this way: You can’t pour from an empty cup. If you’re not taking care of yourself mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, how can you expect to show up fully for others? This was a serious “woah” moment for me, and it shifted how I think about everything, from my career to my personal life.

How to Build a Stronger Relationship With Yourself

  1. Set Clear Intentions – Whether it’s yoga, a work project, or personal time, always move with intention. Know why you’re doing what you’re doing.
  2. Recognize Avoidable Friction – Are you holding onto habits, thoughts, or people that create unnecessary stress or pain? Identify them and take steps to eliminate them.
  3. Stay Curious – Part of self-growth is discovering what you don’t know. Stay open to new experiences, ideas, and feedback.
  4. Create Space – By clearing out mental and emotional clutter, you make room for things that truly matter: freedom, joy, peace, and personal fulfillment.
  5. Link Personal and Professional Development – Your career and personal development are not separate. A strong relationship with yourself fuels better decision-making, career management, and leadership.
  6. Commit to the Long Game – Transformation doesn’t happen overnight. Cultivating a meaningful relationship with yourself takes time, but it’s worth every second.

From Clarity Comes Purpose

The journey of self-discovery is ongoing, but what’s clear to me now is that everything—career growth, personal relationships, and inner peace—starts from within. If you want to lead a life filled with purpose, it begins by investing in the most important person in your life: yourself.

It may feel like a bold move to focus so much inward, but trust me, once you do, everything else falls into place with clarity and strength.
